By nature, children are sensitive, and society's pressures on them today are very different
and probably greater than in the past. Time to putter is seen as time wasted, and the young
are hurtled forward at breakneck speed into their futures. Any difficulties, or patterns of
unwillingness to conform in competitive arenas bring an enormous level of stress to families. (see Editor's Note below to find out how parents can help)
With children preparing to tackle their first year of nursery school, kindergarten, grammar
school, high school or college, feelings can run high. Stress rules, and anxieties run wild,
as the limits to vacation fun and liberty approach. Sometimes physical ailments occur purely
from internal tension as young people prepare to embark into new territory.
Some children set sail happily, welcoming new experiences. Then there are those who just
cannot--who seem to view new situations as insurmountable problems, who cannot move
forward without creating a major fuss, and who just "tear your heart out" with their agony
at facing new experiences. How can we help these children? (One thing that helps is to remember
the "inner child" deep within each adult.)
One simple, natural and completely harmless remedy for these ills is to explore the use of
flower essences. I have selected here a bouquet of essences to help parents use nature's
healing for a variety of the most commonly found difficulties. When one is caught in a
negative attitude, these essences very simply jog the memory and remind one of
positive alternatives. Possessed with a positive outlook, children can progress with joy.
Dosage: A few drops of diluted essence, two or three times a day can make all the
difference. If several remedies are needed, add two drops of each (from a purchased "stock
strength" bottle) to a new one ounce glass dropper bottle, filled with fresh spring water and
mix well. Do not combine more than three to five in one dosage bottle, to avoid confusion of energies.
CALIFORNIA WILD ROSE, a pink rose, is used for the reluctant child who has difficulty
finding enthusiasm for life, for school, for anything except perhaps too much television.
Apathetic, they lack vital energy. Roses, with thorns as protection, teach one to fight for
life and embrace it happily.
FIVE-FLOWER FORMULA, also known as "Rescue Remedy" is a well-known
combination used world wide for alleviating major stress on many levels.
This is usually the first essence to consider after one suffers any trauma, shock, pain or
grief. It is a great one for use at the moment of stress, such as the morning school starts.
MIMULUS is a fear remedy, specifically for known fears--of school, of strangers, of
new situations, also spiders, bugs, snakes. Mimulus reminds of our innate courage when
we can name our fear.
BORAGE is an essence for overcoming grief. It helps the sad child who has forgotten joy
and courage, who is focused on the end of vacation instead of the beginning of an educational adventure
and new experiences.
WALNUT is a link-breaker for those who find difficulty making changes and moving
forward--for the "two steps forward, three steps back" type. Walnut helps release past patterns,
habits or even the memories of old, bad experiences that hold them back.
HONEYSUCKLE'S indications concern nostalgia for the past. Use it for the
child who yearns for a previous environment like an earlier school and friends left behind.
It will help move their focus into the present time.
SELF-HEAL brings centering and balance and the ability to regain that balance during
stressful times. It can be added to any combination with good results, and enhances the
qualities of other essences given.
MARIPOSA LILY is a hug for the child who needs an emotional cuddle, for its gift is a
warm sense of mothering and unconditional love. This lily's bulb is safe within Mother
Earth, even if its bloom is out there in an unfriendly environment.
DILL helps the sensitive being who is too easily drained by over-stimulation or too much social
interaction. A classroom of exuberant, energetic youngsters can be suddenly
overwhelming after a quieter home life. Dill helps filter out what cannot comfortably be
allowed in from their new environment. Instead of feeling under siege or victimized, the
child retains a sense of personal power.
MILKWEED frees the overly-dependent child who clings to mother's skirt. It can also
assist older children who are reluctant to leave home appropriately. Milkweed's gift is much needed independence.

Editors' Note:
Parents really do want their children to do their best and achieve the most. However, sometimes this can become an unhealthy pressure for already-stressed children. If adults need help in being more balanced in their goals for children, then there are essences to help them rememer the fun, curiosity, and adventure they can help bring to kids' lives.
DESERT ALCHEMY COMBINATION FORMULAS: Integrating Being and Doing for those who are too bound up in
the latter and Thank Heaven for Little Girls, for appreciating the child and
allowing childhood. Making and Honoring Boundaries for respecting others' boundaries and limits.
FES: Mariposa Lily to nurture the bond between parent and child.
Deerbrush to purify the motives for striving for the child.
Goldenrod to let go of the need to worry that others might do better than your child. Tiger Lily to get past aggressive competitiveness.
WHOLE ENERGY ESSENCES: Clover for acceptance of the way things are. Sunset Lily for freedom from
extreme states. Mint Flower remembers the importance of innocence and trust in a child's life. Peonies reaffirms child-like
fun, enthusiasm and excitement. Plus combinations Letting Go and Playfulness.
