Experimenting with Master Harmonizing Mixture

By Deborah Bier, M.Ed, maker of Whole Energy Essences, a holistic practitioner and co-editor of this site.

While I trust and value intuitive information, I feel it is important to also conduct scientific experiments involving essences. After all, we are both logical and intuitive, and it is healthy to include and integrate both aspects into our experience.

We at Whole Energy Essences have conducted trials with both versions of our Master Harmonizing Mixture (MHM): the water- and oil-based blends. The first was with plants, the second in conjunction with massage therapy.

MHM is an essence is often used as an "emergency" essence or as a "generalist." This is one of the essences we usually let people try when teaching classes about essences. It has an extremely broad-spectrum action and therefore we reason the most people will be affected by it in a classroom situation.

This combination's original name was Homeostasis, which refers to the creation and maintenance of internal balance in any system. It helps us re-establish and experience our inherent state of harmony...to organize, settle, and focus. It is a mixture of the essences of Clover ("Acceptance"), Sedum ("Release from Limits"), and Peonies ("Child-Like Excitement").

MHM Helps Plants
We ran several experimental trials using scarlet runner beans (a type of stringbean with red flowers, the leaves of which are pictured on this page in a colorized form) and Master Harmonizing Mixture to see how the essence might affect their germination and early growth. We had two groups: one which received the essence daily and one which received a placebo daily when they were watered with the same amount of water. The growers conducting the experiments did not know which was which (though it quickly became apparent). Except where noted, the results were replicated over multiple trials.

In all trials, every individual in the essence group germinated as fast or faster than those in the non-essence group; not one was slower. In one trial, the MHM-treated plants germinated an average of 25% faster. There was always 100% germination of the MHM plants. The non-treatment group always germinated at a rate of 80%.

In the MHM group, there quickly emerged what we call "exceptional individuals." That is, a number of plants with exceptional qualities (bigger, bushier, bloomed earlier), with none of these individuals emerging in the non-essence group.

There were several instances of damping-off (a fungal disease of seedlings) and other types of unknown damage in the non-essence group. The damping-off always proved fatal to the plants in that group, which is normal from our general gardening experience. There was only one occurrence of damping-off in the MHM group, and that individual showed amazing recuperative abilities, displaying a new, tiny set of healthy leaves at the point of damage only a day after the disease was first noticed.

And lastly, one trial indicated the MHM group required far less water than the non-essence group. A future experiment will have to be conducted to examine this specific response.

Massage Therapy and MHM Oil
We asked massage therapists to use Master Harmonizing Mixture Oil added to their regular massage oil. This oil is mostly grape-seed, with just a touch of safflower and a whiff of olive. Very light, it blends well with massage oils.

We asked them to fill out a questionnaire, asking both the client and therapist what they experienced as we were curious about how the oil might affect them both. We asked about the client's experience of pain (more, less, or the same as usual), and the therapist's perception of how deep they were able to work. We asked both how they felt on each of these characteristics compared to the usual massage: relaxation, fatigue, presence (how "there" they felt), tears/sadness, laughter/enjoyment.

In summary, the clients experienced significantly greater amounts of relaxation, feeling present, tears/sadness, laughter/enjoyment. They experienced usual amounts of fatigue and pain.

The therapists experienced significantly more relaxation, less fatigue, more presence, and more laughter/enjoyment. They also experienced working more deeply in a large number of sessions.

We would have liked to have had a big enough experimental population to have done a double blind--that is, have a control group which (unbeknownst to them) were not using the essence oil. There is always the danger that respondents may be trying to please the therapist or the experimenter and a control group helps sift out that effect.

But in the absence of that, we think the results point to a good amount of truthfulness in the answers. The clients' almost unanimous responses that they did not experience less pain or fatigue would have been different had they been trying to please their therapist.

DESIGN CREDITS: The leafy art was made by the author, who scanned and colorized the scarlet runner bean plant. The vibrant pinks and purples in it are what she felt were energetically representative of the plant at that moment.
