My other article in this issue talks about the characteristics of three different Yarrows -- white, yellow, and pink. They are different in effect precisely because their colors are different. To enhance our understanding of other flower families, let's consider how the color of flowers in general may hint at the specific way they help us.
In particular, we will look at the chakra system -- the seven invisible energy centers in the aura or energy body that surrounds our physical body -- and the colors associated with them. Often--although it should be noted, not always--the issues that the various colors of flowers address are linked to the corresponding energy center.
RED is associated with the root or base chakra at the tailbone, which governs issues of grounding and survival. The Australian Bush flower essence Red Lily helps people become grounded and focused when they feel scattered or disconnected. As an illustration of how profoundly colors of the blossoms alter the effects of various remedies, Red Lily is actually a form of lotus. The Lotus essence made from white flowers applies to the crown chakra, meditation, and various forms of spiritual practice, while the Red Lily grounds us solidly in our bodies. ORANGE is affiliated with the reproductive system and thus with the second chakra, near the navel. An orange flower, Tiger Lily (FES and Pegasus) helps men or women who are overly yang to balance their inner masculine and feminine energies.
YELLOW is connected with the solar plexus region, the seat of the self-esteem required to put yourself out in the world with confidence. Yellow Chamomile (FES, Petite Fleur, Harebell, and Pegasus) soothes nervous upsets that tend to settle in the tummy/solar plexus region due to challenges to our self-confidence. Golden Yarrow, discussed in my other article in this issue, is another solar plexus support.
GREEN (and PINK) relate to the fourth or heart center -- home of our heart connections to others. Bleeding Heart is another remedy produced by both FES and Pegasus, that's very pink and actually appears to be shaped like drooping hearts. What you see is what you get. It helps in letting go of a broken relationship.
BLUE is the color of the throat chakra, self-expression being the core issue of the color blue and the throat chakra. Blue flag is another name for Iris (made by the Alaska Flower Essence Project, FES and Petit Fleur). Iris enables us to express creativity. Forget-me-not from Pacific Essences is for opening the channels of communication, engaging in what is fulfilling, and helpful in emotionally-caused speech disorders.
INDIGO is connected with the "third eye" in the center of the forehead. Indigo, the sixth chakra color, is a dark blue to a grayish purple. It takes its name from the plant used to create indigo dye. Such a violet-blue range flower is Rosemary, an essence offered by FES, Desert Alchemy, and Pegasus. It helps awakening and embodiment for the person with his or her upper chakras so open, they are not really "here" (and probably long to be elsewhere due to difficult experiences with the physical world.) VIOLET (or WHITE) is associated with the crown chakra in the upper brain, which is considered our interface with spirit. Lavender, made by Harebell, Pegasus, and FES, is a good representative of the seventh chakra flowers, with its violet color and ability to help people who are over-stimulated by spiritual forces. It is noteworthy that sixth and seventh chakra issues often "run together" and are as difficult to distinguish as the many shades of blue that melt into violet and purple in nature. My first metaphysical teacher said these two chakras actually merge with meditation practice.
Convenient, isn't it, how nature provides its own color coding? (A handy acronym for remembering the chakra colors in the order of the colors of the spectrum is ROY G. BIV) When you're overwhelmed with the vast possibilities for choosing a flower remedy, this is a good place to start: Consider where in the chakra system the issue in question "fits." Then you can zero in on a family of essences by color, and within that branch, you're likely to find the one that's just right for you now.
