One of the growing areas of flower essence therapy is its use in
conjunction with chiropractic care. Among the reasons for this is
increased awareness of how states of mind affect the body. In particular,
posture and muscle tension immediately suggest therapy for the deep roots
of a problem while correcting the physically-manifested aspect.
The common method is to consult the patient to investigate and diagnose
the causes of pain, injury or discomfort in the usual way. This
will include, for those who diagnose from the deeper levels, the internal
journey that has led to the physical symptoms. Even in the case of physical
accidents, individual response is dictated to by the internal state, so some
people may for example hold onto more pain or in a particular way, due to
their predominant state of mind.
Essences are selected to prepare the patient for their spinal or other adjustment.
The essences are then applied, and for up to ten minutes the patient lies quietly for the essence to be absorbed deeply.
People often ask whether flower essences mask the injuries, like pain
killers do. If there is an injury, the flower essences will not work against those very necessary
signals. However, they relieve causes or states of mind which create more pain
than is necessary for the body to signal its need for attention.
Living Essences of Australia's Contribution to This Work
Stimulating the increased use of essences in chiropractic and other body
work is the pioneer work from Drs. Vasudeva and Kadambii Barnao, the founders of Living
Essences of Australia, as to the application of flower essences on specific
acupuncture points. Those who don't have an acupuncture background can
take these essences orally as a longer term and deeper way of working with imbalances.
Several of Living Essences' offerings are most commonly used in chiropractic
work: Dampiera, Menzies Banksia, Purple Flag Flower, Macrozamia, Yellow Flag,
Pink Fairy, Hybrid Pink Fairy Orchid, and Ursinia. Though these remarks are directed toward
chiropractic care, many of these same essences could be helpful in other types of body
work as well, such as osteopathy, massage, reflexology and shiatsu. Their descriptions
and uses are as follows:
DAMPIERA is for use on cramping muscles and areas of the body that
have seized up or are tight. Simple application of the essence to the areas
affected will allow a gradual release. It is also good for people with tight body tension from
worry or rigid attitudes.
MENZIES BANKSIA is used on painful hot spots and sites of old injuries
which continue to cause muscle spasm or pain. Often used in conjunction
with Dampiera for that reason, it can be simply applied to the affected area. It is also good
for those who have fear of pain because of past experiences and hence are always
expecting it, adding to their stress and therefore their pain. Such responses create the
effect of residual pain, something that Menzies Banksia is especially good for. It is often
used around wound sites after surgery.
PURPLE FLAG FLOWER is applied to areas where there has been a build-up of
pressure which needs releasing. It is also effective for those who can't release
mental stress and who hold in tension, creating painful physical responses such as headaches.
MACROZAMIA is used where pain is associated with sexual organs,
particularly menstrual pain, or for blocking of movement or build up of fluids in the body.
It can be simply applied to affected area. It is also used after surgery around wound sites, where
it is conducive to healing.
YELLOW FLAG FLOWER is used on the Shenmen acu-point
to relieve
feelings of stress and generally brighten up patients and help them
maintain a positive space.
PINK FAIRY ORCHID is used on the Shenmen acu-point to relieve
feelings of stress in those who cannot tolerate environmental pressures
such as noise, hectic situations and interruptions. HYBRID PINK FAIRY ORCHID is
specifically used on the Shenmen acu-point for those whose stress consists
of hyper-sensitivity to other people's reactions.
URSINIA is used on the body to connect areas that are frozen or not
connecting to the rest of the body. Also used with LEAFLESS ORCHID to promote better neuron/nerve
message connections between the spine and limbs.
Examples of How these Essences are Used in Chiropractic
Suppose that a patient comes to a chiropractor with back pain, and the back
muscles are extraordinarily tight, with sporadic painful areas. The chiropractor
applies Dampiera on the site and either applies Menzies Banksia to the painful
areas, or applies it to the appropriate point on the ear, according to the Floral
Acu-map.
After a few minutes,
the chiropractor investigates again and if necessary adjusts the
spine. This can be done without undue pain for the patient, because the muscles are already
released and there is not an expectation of pain in the body. Afterwards the adjustment
holds very well because the muscles aren't pulling the spine out of alignment again in a
habitual response.
In another instance, a very anxious and stressed patient needs an
adjustment. The chiropractor first de-stresses the patient using Yellow Flag Flower and
Hybrid Pink Fairy Orchid on the Shenmen acu-point of the ear. Then Purple Flag
Flower is applied down the spine to relieve the build-up of pressure. After a
few minutes the chiropractor sees the pain has gone with the stress and a
small adjustment is needed to enhance the patient's increasing sense of
well being.
