Essences to Aid Meditation Practice
Note: This is an excerpt from the author's book Modern Meditation: Going Within (Ansuz Press, 2001) and is published with her permission.

Flower essences are beautiful, mild remedies that can help you overcome some of the most difficult blockages to meditation. Rather than addressing physical symptoms, flower essences are designed to heal emotional/intuitive/spiritual concerns. This is also the realm of meditation. Flower essences are a perfect way to help heal the old wounds that prevent us from comfortably entering a meditative state in the present.

Meditation is a simple, aware state of being, but there are obstacles to truly entering a state of meditation. Our defenses were developed to protect us from emotional pain at a time when we had few other tools to use to protect ourselves. Defenses keep us from truly connecting with our inner selves and the intuitive power that lies within. Flower essences are a gentle remedy that can help remove defenses that are no longer necessary for our survival. Together, flower essences and meditation reconnect us with that wise and patient part of ourselves that has always been within, waiting for us to come back.

There are many, many flower essences that are very healing and may enhance your meditation practice. (This special issue of Vibration is devoted to introducing you to a variety of them.) I'll go ahead and describe three essences that are very healing for many people, so you can see what kinds of benefits they offer. All three are offered by the Flower Essence Society and other essence manufacturers.

ANGEL'S TRUMPET (pictured at top and left): Essence made from the flower of the angel's trumpet plant helps the mind overcome the fear of connecting with your inner self. Meditation requires your willingness to change, to begin to view yourself differently from a new perspective beyond the baby blue eyeslimitations of the intellectual mind. It is this fear that blocks us from being able to connect with the inner self in meditation. Angel's Trumpet helps transcend that fear.

BABY BLUE EYES (pictured at right): Flower essence made from the baby blue eyes plant helps restore a sense of safety and connection. Many of us grew up in unfortunate circumstances, lacking emotional support, and witnessing or enduring abuse. This leaves us with a profound lack of trust in the world. This can inhibit our attempts at meditation when we don't believe we have a secure place of safety within ourselves. This remedy helps restore the energy and vitality that has been drained over the years as a result of constantly keeping up our guard. Baby Blue Eyes essence is also particularly healing for those who lacked a healthy, positive connection with their father or father figure.

YARROW is beneficial for sensitive people. If you are emotionally sensitive, you may have defenses interfering with your meditation even if you haven't had to endure a great deal of pain or abuse in your life. As a sensitive person, you have developed defenses just as a coping mechanism to exist in our crowded, hectic, insensitive world. Ironically, this can interfere with the sensitive person's ability to meditate. Yarrow can solve this problem. (For a more information about this topic, see my earlier article in Vibration Empathy, Emotional Sensitivity, and the Flower Essences; also an article by Joyce Mason on Yarrow here.)

One helpful way to use the essences is to sip a glass of water with essences mixed in, allowing the water to cleanse you from the inside out! As you sip water with flower essence drops in it, meditate on allowing the healing energies of the essences to cooperatively merge with your own energy. You might also add a dropperful to your bath and meditate as you bathe. Notice how the water feels against you and against your solar plexus, located in the area of the waist. Allow your solar plexus to take in the healing, purifying energies of the water. Water cleanses more than just dirt. It cleanses worries, doubts, emotional stresses, and the unneeded energies you may have encountered during the day. When you are done with your bath meditation, allow the water to take the unneeded, unwanted energies down the drain.

Dr. Mesich has employed alternative healing techniques since early in her career. The first non-traditional healing modality in which she was trained was hypnosis. While using hypnosis with psychotherapy clients, Dr. Mesich observed that the clients treated with hypnosis were able to access deeper emotions, achieve emotional breakthroughs more quickly and easily, and heal much more effectively overall than the clients treated with conventional talking therapy alone.

This was the beginning of her career shift to alternative, natural healing. In the years since, Dr. Mesich has studied extensively in the field of alternative health, blending herbalism, flower essence therapy, and energy healing into her current practice. She works and resides in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Visit her website at www.KyraMesich.com.
