The Y2K Problem as a Positive Treatment Issue

By Deborah Bier, M.Ed., editor for this publication. Deborah has a masters in counseling psychology and 10 years experience in private practice.
(see here for an earlier article on this subject)
It would be no surprise to any type of therapist or health care practitioner to find that the Year 2000 (Y2K) Bug might cause their clients to be nervous. Even fearful. If not panicked, angry, grieving, and maybe even overwhelmed. In fact, many of us are already seeing the Y2K presence in our practices, and there is little chance this will abate anytime during the rest of 1999.

Of course, essences can be turned to for help with all these emotional states. You may already have some of your favorites in mind for the job, and we made some initial suggestions for panic, denial, and worry in the last issues' Y2K article . It would be a good idea to keep a number of such choices on hand because as we get close to the millennium change, psychological pressures are bound to build. This is a normal and expected reaction to an anticipated set of stressors.

But this article isn't about the fear, anger, and grief which this potential crisis may bring. It's about seeing the Y2K bug as an occasion for optimism, hope, opening to new possibilities, and moving toward wholeness.

Editors' Essence Suggestions

DESERT ALCHEMY -- Desert energies are very hardy for survival. (quoted from Cynthia Athina Kemp Scherer's Alchemy of the Desert).

Sacred Datura: "Dissolving your illusions or cherished beliefs about reality; courage to let go of the familiar and secure; eases the confusion and paradox often experienced during periods of transformation and perceptual shifts; helps open the doors of perception to a new, expanded experience of reality; encourages deep inner visionary states and acceptance of them as a natural part of being."

Community Spirit Formula: "this formula enhances the ability to gently and firmly express our personal needs in relation to the group and to contribute inspiration to the community. It sparks an appreciation of our place in the greater global community and a sense of responsibility for the earth."

Wind and Storm Formula: "helps us be able to flow with change and chaos when it appears in our lives. It is useful when we need support for allowing changes or chaos to flow through us without resisting or becoming rigid. This essence restores balance if we are frenetic or out of control so we can respond appropriately to life situations."

WHOLE ENERGY ESSENCES -- entire line focuses on accentuating innate gifts and strengths (quoted from the company's literature)

Lavender Chrysanthemum - "I know myself to be a powerful creative force in my life."

Pale Yellow Lily - "I experience my own strength as I meet all the comes into my life."

Russet Chrysathemum Bud - "I am enriched by community with others" (see special article on this essence)

Immediate Adjustment - "Adjustment to sudden change; marshal strength and flexibility."

Many of us regard anticipatory change as an expectation of loss. Period. Because we may not be seeing the other possibilities, we get drawn down into panic, fear, and grief with relief coming only from denial. And, when the change occurs, the perspective of loss continues. It may take a lot of work from then on to mentally reinterpret and reframe the transition as representing something else.

If we could open ourselves more to OTHER possible outcomes right now, then we could then consider that change might be interesting, challenging, hopeful, and exciting. We may still be frightened, upset, or disturbed by it, but these feelings could be balanced by more optimistic ones. So, when the change comes, we can better be in touch with all its qualities.

What a wonderful opportunity for vibrational essences to play a role! Essences don't only work with "negative" states, but serve to midwife "positive" ones, too. So, essences which focus on accentuating our natural optimism, hopefulness, and creativity would be good choices at this time. Also, look for ones which help bring forward innate problem-solving abilities, flexibility, and calm. These can help change the mental framework from "oh, what a terrible loss this will be!" to "oh, what an interesting times we live in!"

So, just what are the positive opportunities which Y2K represents? How could it bring us happy challenges? Well, any potential crisis can turn into an opportunity to reassess what is important to us...to think about what our values are and how we express them. And all over the world, Y2K is becoming an excuse to reaffirm and enhance our sense of community, as the conclusion many are coming to is that we can get through this better if we hang together and help one each other. It's a marvelous chance to learn new skills, meet new people, and reclaim parts of our lives we left behind when we got so busy and distracted by everyday life.

Seen in this way, Y2K not just only a potential threat, but a priceless opportunity. Even if the Y2K Problem ends up to be much ado about nothing, we could realize important gains if we take it as an occasion to explore and grow.

As practitioners, this is an approach we can offer to clients through our work, and the benefits can start immediately. After all: there is always change on a grand scale waiting in every life. If, in the final analysis, Y2K does not represent such a transition, there is something else in the future which will.

DESIGN CREDITS: Art on this page is made digitalizing the pattern on the author's great-grandmother's porcelain cocoa set. We may come to appreciate some of the pre-electricity skills from preceeding generations during our possible Y2K adjustment; so, too, can we enjoy art from that time translated to a new medium.
