EDITORS' NOTE: In our continuing education series for essence
practitioners, we felt it was important to address the issue of
ethics. The following proposal for a statement of ethics was drafted
by three members of The Cascadian Association for the Study of Essences,
and we feel it contains valuable and well-considered
points. The authors of this document were Karen Boyd, Anne Giraud, and frequent Vibration
contributor, Paul Wyman. Each practitioner will, of course, want to weigh and consider what
constitutes ethical practice, but this proposal is an excellent start. We welcome feedback and
discussion from readers.
As an essence practitioner, I am committed to supporting my clients
in a respectful manner that honors their individual needs, privacy and
free will. I strive to treat my clients as I would wish to be treated,
and it is from this simple consideration that I subscribe to these
ethical guidelines.
Flower essence practice is an adjunctive form of health care, aimed
at supporting balance and harmony in the soul-spiritual life of my clients.
The feelings, thoughts, and attitudes expressed by clients are the basis of
recommending appropriate essences.
I listen with respect to my clients' needs and do not recommend essences
that treat issues we have not discussed.
I treat only the individual who seeks my services and never treat
someone without their express conscious permission. To treat someone without
their conscious knowledge is intrusive and violates the rights of the
individual. The only exception to this is in the treatment of children,
whom I can treat with parental permission.
I respect that essence therapy can be an important adjunct to
healing, but recognize that it does not replace appropriate medical or
psychological treatment. I recognize that training as a flower essence
practitioner does not qualify me to make medical or psychiatric diagnoses,
unless I possess other training, degrees, or qualifications. I recognize an
ethical duty to refer clients to qualified practitioners when their needs
are beyond the scope of my training and ability.
I provide accurate information regarding my education, training,
and experience, and refrain from claiming directly or implying professional
qualifications exceeding those I have obtained.
I do not make unrealistic claims or promises or create inappropriate
expectations about the results of using flower essences.
I respect the integrity of other forms of health care and make
efforts to build bridges and develop collaborative relationships to
achieve the best possible care for individual clients.
I remain available to my clients following treatment should they
have questions or concerns. However, I do not engage in any mode of
practice that promotes dependency or exploitation of clients.
I respect every client's right to privacy and confidentiality.
Information revealed within a flower essence consultation may not be
shared without my client's express permission. Any chart notes remain
strictly confidential.
I agree to conduct a practice that is non-discriminatory.
I recognize my work to be that of a guide and educator, empowering
my clients to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to support their
own well-being. In doing so, I inform my clients about the scope and benefits
of flower essence practice and its unique contribution to well-being, with
appropriate verbal and written information, including information about
common responses to the use of flower essences.
I strive to set fees that are reasonable, ethical, and within reach
of the general public and to make provisions for flexibility in fees for
low-income clients.
I regularly evaluate my strengths and limitations, biases, and
levels of effectiveness, striving for self-improvement and seeking
professional development through further education and training.
I make the commitment to raising the overall standards of flower
essence practice by maintaining the highest level of integrity in my own
conduct as a flower essence practitioner and educator.
