So GLAD You Could Make It!

©1999 by Deborah Bier, M. Ed.

Gretchen Lawlor's article in this issue gives a simple, clear method for making flower essences, so we hope many of you will embark on the adventure of essence making this summer. In an earlier article, I gave some perspectives on how essence makers come up with meanings and uses for their remedies. (See "Discovering What an Essence Does" in our March, 1999 issue.

Now we invite you to join the editors of Vibration in a collaborative project where many of us will make and test the same remedy--gladiola--and share our impressions of the uses of this essences.

I looked in my various catalogues and books to see if any company currently offers this essence, and I didn't find any. However, I could already hear the gladiola devas nudging me to make the remedy and giving me hints about what the remedy would do. As I meditated on the form of the flowers, some impressions came to me.

Their height supports the ability to look far, far beyond the current perspective. To see waaaay outside of current limits, like a soaring bird. To never get trapped by the puny or in unimportant details. They listen to the silence and the wind and therefore can hear and know.

There is a great detachment to such a height, yet it is not without feeling....it is not numb, but just outside of the push and pull of mundane communication and exchange.

They are rather amused by the "sword" connection in their name. (Their name derives from the same root as gladiator.) They are more male than not, but this cutting, warrior, super-macho thing isn't something they connect to well--at least not the ones I'm talkin' with. They're too airy for that. They make a joke that maybe on the astral this sword idea works out better. (Flower humor can be a bit strange, I'm sure you've noticed.)

They also deal with dreaming, in the visionary sense. They are an effective interface between the known and unknown; the seen, physical world and the unseen world or thought, consciousness, and concepts. They weave together these strands. This is definitely a step or two above the astral plane type of dreaming.

They are in a lot of ways detached from humans--not in a haughty, superior way, but because they lack the common type of ego which drives most of us. They have no way of connecting to humans who live in that place...nothing to say or exchange about. Because they have detached themselves from the astral, they are consciousness raising and we could suppose an essence made from them would act in this way, too.

Okay, readers! Those are my preliminary notions, but your impressions may be different from mine. I hope you'll go ahead and make a remedy of the gladiolas you know and love, then record your observations as you test the result. One important clue--the color of your variety may make a difference, so do let us know what color flower you used. (The one used in my meditation was apricot.) For another interesting test, make remedies of several colors of glads together.
