Dream Catchers: Essences That Enhance
Dreams or Dreamwork

©2001By Joyce Mason

In Dream Drops, my article in the September, 2000 of issue of Vibration, we began to explore how flower essences impact dreams and give us sleeping previews of behavioral breakthrough. Often we find out in a dream before we notice the changes-in-the making in waking! We covered the importance of dreams to mental health and how they can sometimes offer us suggestions for taking specific flower essences, if we understand their subtle language. In this article, I want to focus on flower essences known to help us remember our dreams and remedies that impact their frequency or quality.

Help Remembering Dreams

"To sleep: perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub."
--William Shakespeare

We can't work with material we can't remember. Many essences open us to subtler forces, including dreams and intuitive insights, which blessedly often go together. Star Tulip by the Flower Essence Society (FES) evokes sensitivity and attunement to altered states of consciousness, especially in dreams and meditation.

Sometimes we have to get there by the back door. If you have one of those busy minds that won't settle down, sometimes even leading to insomnia, White Chestnut (Bach, Healing Herbs) can clear your mind chatter and soothe you into a calm state of receptivity to the deep sleep needed to dream. If your mind is racing from too much happening in your life (what modern person's isn't?), a round of Dill (FES) can help you integrate the day's activities. Then your dreams can go to the deeper layer where meaning lies, rather than treating you to a brain dump of the day's random and jumbled activities. (Editor's note: Joyce's in-depth portrait of Dill can be found on her frequent contributor's page, linked below.)

Sweet Dream Formula (Spiral Visions) is said to facilitate dreams and intuitive understanding. Redwood Essence (Ancient Forest Essences) allows takers to go into the silence in meditation or that deep place in sleep from which dreams are made. A number of essences made by Pegasus are highlighted as helping to stimulate dreams: Apple, Coleus, Jimson Weed, Gum Plant, Litchi, Orange, and Owl's Clover.

Dream Quantity and Quality

"My troublous dream this night doth make me sad."
--William Shakespeare

more articles by this author here (click)We all want pleasant dreams and would rather avoid nightmares--although the path of growth sometimes evokes the latter as a feedback mechanism. Scary dreams are almost always telling you something, and I'd highly recommend trying to understand the message before letting them drop away with flower remedies.

When a nightmare comes as an exception rather than the rule, it is especially giving you a flashing neon light to look at something in your life. I almost never have negative, much less frightening dreams. The last time I had a Nightmare on Elm Street, it was tipping me off to a nastygram coming in the mail from someone about to attack me out of the blue. I thought she was a good friend, and I was completely broadsided.

On the other hand, if we have unsettling dreams most of the time we can hardly sleep or function well; much less focus on the inner lessons of our "night classes". St. John's Wort (FES) quells deep fears and disturbed dreams, often resulting from overly expanded states of consciousness leading to psychic and physical vulnerability. Mugwort (FES) helps individuals integrate psychic and dream experiences, especially when the dreamer has become too emotionally overstimulated from an overly active dream life. When you're looking for a sign, Forget-Me-Not (FES, Pegasus) helps facilitate communication and connection with spirit guides or your dearly departed.

After learning to remember your dreams and to create some quality control in your dream life, the next steps are to record your dreams and reap their wisdom. This means learning how to decipher the custom code of your own night movies. While I can't expand on that due to space considerations, flower essences can also be a boon on that score. Rabbitbrush (FES) can help you be aware of many details simultaneously, while Shasta Daisy helps synthesize many thoughts and ideas into a meaningful whole. Chestnut Bud (Bach, Healing Herbs) helps us understand the lessons gained in dreams--especially those dogged recurring ones.

Queen Anne's Lace (FES; pictured at right)--one of my favorite essences--helps blockages to your metaphysical sight. Looking closely at the blossom, you can see it resembles a dream catcher. If you just don't get it, go visit the Queen!

Last but not least, sweet dreams!
