Smoothe and Soothe: Essences Help a Frantic Holiday Season

By Deborah Bier, M.Ed., co-editor of Vibration Magazine

tree with snowOk: we've got 9,000 people coming over for Christmas dinner...4,200 cakes, pies and cookies have been made...50,000 presents have been bought and wrapped. The house has been cleaned, rearranged, decorated. Music from a brass ensemble has been arranged for; the Mormon Tabernacle might drop by, too. Yes, another quiet little holiday season has begun...

Of course, the above is an exaggeration. But perhaps only in the details; the amount of expectation, energy and eating that goes on for many of us can be overblown, overdrawn, and over-the-top to an enormous degree. And this makes for a stressful -- not satisfying -- season.

It is possible to turn the December holidays into a more gratifying, peaceful, and spiritual time. With some thought, a little advance notice, and a few vibrational essences, you can take back this unnecessarily busy, expensive, materialistic, and stressful time...do away with the distractions which block its deeper and more satisfying meanings. (For those in the northern hemisphere, seasonal light deprivation may also add to holiday stress -- see here and here for articles about essences for that challenge.)

I recommend you start by thinking about what qualities you would like to see dominate the holidays. Family togetherness? Love of the Creator? Peace and stillness? Laughter? Don't focus on the negative of what you DON'T want, but what you DO. Then select some essences (1-5 of them) which enhance and accentuate these characteristics. Do this ahead of time if possible, from 3-6 weeks before holiday pressure comes on -- though last minute is better than never!

You and your family can start using them regularly -- be consistent and don't just use a single dose and put them aside. When the holidays come along, judge for yourselves after some time has passed how you feel. Remember your goals and compare them with what you are experiencing. You may be surprised to find what used to "zing" you doesn't quite have the power over you it used to. You might find you are more relaxed, more at one with your friends and family, and better attuned to the spiritual and emotional depth of this time of year.

Below are some examples of specific essences around specific themes. Of course, these are general and the ones best for any particular person will vary. Follow the recommended dosage from the manufacturer. Mail order sources for many companies are listed here.

  • Enjoyable family togetherness - Beech, Chestnut Bud, Chicory (B), Dogwood (FES), Russett Chrsanthemum Bud (WEE)
  • A slower pace - Centaury (B), Dill (FES)
  • Joyful giving and receiving of gifts (gratitude) - Pine (B), Giving & Receiving Support (DA), Peony (FES, WEE), Receiving, Letting Go (WEE)
  • Peace, quiet - Vervain (B), Dandelion (FES), Restedness, Lobelia (WEE)
  • Sustained energy and optimism - Olive, Gorse, Wild Rose (B), Aloe Vera, Tansy (FES), Master Harmonizing Mixture (WEE)
  • Sensible eating - Tiger Lily (WEE)
Key: B=Bach Remedies; DA=Desert Alchemy; FES=Flower Essence Services; WEE=Whole Energy Essences

You might even want to consider giving these or other essences to some of your friends and loved ones as presents -- either in dosage bottle form, or, for the gift that keeps on giving, in stock (concentrate) form. What could be a better gift than some holiday sanity, spiritual uplift, and loving company? And they doesn't even need to be wrapped...
