Remedies such as flower essences, gem elixirs, and star remedies can beautifully
supplement astrological work. They can be used to temper astrological features of the
birth chart to establish a better internal balance and sense of harmony. Blends of these
essences can be suggested for short or long term support in facilitating change in both
core conditions -- as represented by natal chart patterns -- and in current conditions -- the
transits to natal positions.
For example, a new client (born July 8, 1965) came to me with this familiar story. She
had been in a repressive five year marriage to a man intent on both controlling and
belittling her. She reacted by withdrawing into herself, falling into a depression, and
feeling guilt and blame for all that was going wrong in their relationship.
During a period when transiting Pluto in Sagittarius formed a sextile (60 degrees) to
her natal Mars in Libra, and Uranus in Aquarius formed a trine (120 degrees) to it,
she found a liberating, empowering new relationship which catalyzed not
only the opening of her heart but also her sexuality in some dramatic
encounters. Would this new relationship, however, merely wind up being a repetition of
the same old pattern?
Together we probed her "modus operandi" with men and arrived at what she
felt was her core issue -- that she had always been passive in response to her
own needs and had difficulty speaking up for herself. With Mars in Libra, traditionally
considered the sign of its detriment, this is a common manifestation.
Her realization? She had to start owning her power. She needed to find the balance point between her own
deep needs and those of her partner. Using some astrodrama techniques, we acted out
active versus passive modes of behavior. I suggested that she act as if she had a Mars in
Aries, the sign Mars rules.
We concluded this process by deciding together on appropriate remedies. We began with
Pegasus' planetary essence of Mars, to strengthen and enhance the natal chart
position as well as to help stimulate the positive transiting Pluto and
Uranus aspects. We also chose the gem essence Obsidian to strengthen the Pluto trine.
We added Bach's Pine for her guilt and feelings of blame, their Walnut, "the
link breaker," to help her break her problematic relationship pattern, and
the Flower Essence Society's Cayenne to help her energize her Libra Mars and catalyze her own sense of
power. I recommended that she take the remedy faithfully through transiting Pluto's
stationary point, which would last a couple of months.
After three months of taking this remedy combination, she reported that she had
separated from her abusive husband and moved into her own apartment. She
felt more self confident and more in control of her own life. She was pleased to note that
she was not being influenced by the attempts of either her husband or her new love interest
to control her life.
Significantly, she also told me a recent dream. In the dream, her irritated husband
knocked on the door of her new apartment. She answered, accompanied by a full grown
Newfoundland dog. The husband took one look at this new Martian presence,
turned and ran for his life! Clearly the three-month course of taking essences had begun to
make a welcome shift in her long-term relationship patterns.
