Essences from a Cold Climate

©1998 by Donna Cunningham, MSW

The glacier on our cover this issue calls to mind the environmental essences made by the Alaskan Flower Essence Project (AFEP). Taking advantage of the unique conditions of that pure and powerful wilderness habitat, their environmental essence kit includes such intriguing selections as Rainbow Glacier, Portage Glacier, Solstice Sun, Solstice Storm, and Northern Lights.

An environmental essence is not made from anything as tangible as flowers or gemstones, but instead by communicating directly with the nature spirits in some special environment. Steve M. Johnson, AFEP's founder, describes the process this way:

"The preparation of an environmental essence begins with our identification of specific energetic qualities in the environment that we would like to enter into a co-creative agreement with. We then extend an attunement from our hearts to the devic and elemental representatives of these qualities.

"Through this attunement, we communicate our love and blessings and ask that the energies we have identified be transferred into the bowl of water that we have prepared. We accept the essence gratefully as the environment responds. The resulting essence will be totally unique, as the vibrational qualities it contains can never be duplicated in exactly the same way."

The first well-known "non-flower" essence was actually Rock Water, prepared by Dr. Bach almost 70 years ago. AFEP began developing the concept of co-creating essences directly from the environment in 1984 with the preparation of the Solstice Storm essence.

More recently, others have expanded on the idea. Some makers have done essences at sacred sites--for instance, Gretchen Lawlor, a regular contributor to Vibration, has done a series of holy waters including Lourdes, St. Brigid's Well in Ireland, and the Ganges. Others concentrate on sacred rituals or other powerful events. Vibration editor, Deborah Bier, has a series made at the full moons in a one-year cycle.

We thought, however, that Alaskan essences would be especially appropriate for our "winter" issue--though not forgetting that our readers south of the equator are sweltering while we freeze! Let's have a look at a few of those essences, in descriptions taken with his permission from Steve M. Johnson's book, The Essence of Healing, published in 1996 by the Alaskan Flower Essence Project.

RAINBOW GLACIER: "This essence was prepared from water taken at the terminus of Rainbow Glacier, which is located in the Alaskan Range, in the eastern part of the state. The water emerging from the base of this glacier carries not only the physical particle of ground up rock, but also the vibrational imprint of thousands of years of force, pressure, and the climatic interactions of sun, wind, and extreme cold.

"The essence provides a grounding and balancing force for those who have resistance to fully connecting with the physical plane. It is often indicated for individuals who are ready to make a further commitment to being physically present, but require a powerful catalyst to make the shift. It is also helpful for those who are very strongly focused in the celestial realms, as it helps ground those energies in the physical so they can be better understood by the mind and integrated by the body."

PORTAGE GLACIER: "This glacial essence was collected at Portage Lake in southcentral Alaska. The lake sits at the terminus of Portage Glacier, which is part of the vast Chugiak Icefield. The lake itself is a glacial essence forever in the making--as it receives and melts the giant pieces of ice that break off from the glacier, it embodies a timeless and dramatic interplay of the elements of sun, ice, air and earth.

"This essence is an extremely powerful catalyst for cleansing and regeneration. All glaciers are massive generators of negative ions, which cleanse and revitalize the atmosphere. When we take the Portage Glacier essence, or spray it in the air around us, it stimulates the removal of impurites from all levels of our beings, and replaces them with these light-activated ions, which bath our entire energy system in the fresh clean energy of renewal."

For contrast, let's look at Steve's description of an essence made at another Alaskan extreme, the longest day of the year. Recall that this essence was recommended elsewhere in this issue in the article on SAD--Seasonal Affective Disorder.

SOLSTICE SUN: "This essence was prepared during the 'night' and early morning of June 21-22, 1987, as the midnight sun danced along the peaks of the Brooks Range in the northern interior of Alaska, 35 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

"The Solstice Sun essence helps one create and maintain a channel within for an expanded flow of light and energy. It contains the energy of the setting and rising sun: the completion of the old, and the beginning of a new cycle of light. This essence helps us open our hearts and our energy pathways in order to accept and integrate peak experiences in our lives. It is a very transformational essence and can have a powerful effect on our ability to access and move energy through our bodies."
