There is a strong tradition that associates the holly tree with the power
to ward off evil. Whether it is in the Roman rites of Saturnalia, through
the Druids or the Christian Church matters little. There are few other
evergreen broad-leafed trees, and holly is special for that alone, having a
reputation for immortality since it keeps its leaves throughout the year. In
a practical sense the spines that are so prominent on the lower leaves are
there to prevent animals from eating them, but this physical protection is
emblematic of a more subtle protection that the tree embodies.
The flower remedy, Holly is one of several Dr. Edward Bach discovered
for protection. The states of mind associated with his 38 remedies are
grouped under seven headings. The heading for the remedy Holly is
"Oversensitivity to Ideas and Influences." Like the remedy Walnut, Holly
offers protection from negative influences that can attack, or, rather
possess, us. While Walnut protects from outside influences, Holly protects
us from influences that have become internal. We do not like being jealous
or angry; we all prefer happiness to rage. But at times we become helplessly
overwhelmed by negativity. It comes into us as a malevolent thought pattern
that takes us over, often taking up permanent residence within us.
When this occurs, we become unrecognizable. Our natural face is
contorted by antipathy, and we set ourselves against everything even when
there is no real cause.
Envy, hatred, vexation, or jealousy can attack any one of us. If we are
alert, we will resist the attack by a conscious movement of the heart which
counters with love. But should we be too open to such negative influences,
we will become prisoners in our own mind.
Holly acts to reunite us with our own self, to drive out
negativity and to flood us with the healing vibrations of love. Its action
is protective but it is also transforming. As Dr. Bach said, "The ultimate
conquest of all will be through love and gentleness, and when we have
sufficiently developed these two qualities, nothing will be able to assail
us, since we shall ever have compassion and not offer resistance."
