Shamanic Practices and Other Uses of Animal Essences

Founder and Developer of Wild Earth Animal Essences

Wild Earth Animal Essences are similar in manufacture and use to Bach, FES and other flower remedies except they contain the energy of a specific species of animal rather than a species of flower. These remedies are made during a ceremonial process in the wild which includes attuning with and invoking the spirit of the animal involved. The resulting liquid contains the energy of the animal but does not contain any animal parts. (No animals are captured or harmed in the development of these essences.) When one takes an animal essence, it is the consciousness of the animal that interacts with our own consciousness. This interaction occurs in a gentle, supportive way.

The Wild Earth Animal Essences are a bridge between the animals and humankind, a tool through which we can allow the gifts of the animals to serve our own spiritual journeys. Because everything in the universe is interconnected in an indivisible whole, we are able, through using animal essences, to tap directly into the gifts and powers of the wild animals.

The energies of the wild animals and the animal essences can help us to expand spiritually and to tap into those higher aspects of ourselves that we have not yet fully claimed. Each animal embodies a unique aspect of the spiritual Presence of the Divine, and we can draw on this spiritual wisdom on our paths. For example, eagles resonate with the vibration of Divine Vision and Inspiration, doves embody a deep quality of peace and centeredness, and deer embody the qualities of mindful attention and gentleness. Whenever there is an aspect of spiritual expansion that we wish to claim for ourselves, the animal essences can help us. This is the main reason that many turn to the animal essences -- to benefit from the spiritual strength, power and gifts that the animals embody and bring to us.

At the same time, animal essences can help us to uncover, explore, and heal wounded aspects of ourselves that need to be embraced before we can move to the next level of our spiritual development. We often see that when taking an essence for the first time, a person does not immediately experience the benefits of the spiritual qualities of the animals. (break here, like this:) Instead, he or she is led down a path of "emotional housecleaning" which brings to the surface unfinished emotional material that needs to be healed before the full light and power of the specific animal can be experienced.

Below are descriptions of several of the essences, and you will see that they can apply to individual healing needs. However, the editors of Vibration thought that you might also be very interested in hearing about their ceremonial or shamanic uses. Interspersed with the descriptions are interesting observations from Rev. Douglas Buchanan of the Healing Ministry of Sophia, Park Forest, Illinois. This is a lively, ongoing association of healers and body workers, shamans and shamankas, astrologers, pipe carriers of three tribes, rune and Reiki masters, devotees of Muktananda, wiccan priestesses and priests, and magicians of various kinds.

WOLF ESSENCE facilitates grounding and nurtures a sense of divine Presence. It helps in accessing one's ability to know the truth and encourages right action. It assists in defining relationships and setting healthy boundaries with others, yet encourages kinship and a sense of community. Finally, it is for cultivating a joyful spirit, strength of character, integrity, and honoring lifetime commitments.

Rev. Douglas Buchanan reports, "We have had glowing reports on the use of the Wolf Essence by drumming circles. All of them have reported amazing increases in cross communication among the drummers and a perceptible increase in the energy raised by the group for their particular purpose. The Wolf Essence has also been used by two of the rune masters of the group for their Inner Realm work with results that ensured a permanent order being placed. The Rune Inner Realm work in some cases approximates what happens on shamanic journeys, and our Pottawatomie shamanka found it a wonderful aid."

OWL ESSENCE is for accessing and acting upon one's highest wisdom and for seeing clearly through one's darkness. It helps one to directly face things that need attention. It enhances intuition and the ability to "see" things that are not normally seen. Finally, the essence encourages clarity of mind, seeing the truth at the heart of situations, and speaking with a compassionate voice from one's highest place.

Rev. Buchanan notes, "The Owl Essence has been used in shaman journeys, meditation and in hair magic ceremonies. In ceremonies that some of the magician/healers use to remove past life problems, they have found that the client finds it easier to access the problem with the insight into the darkness of the subconscious that Owl gives. It is useful in dream interpretation and in group meditation."

TURTLE ESSENCE is for experiencing deep grounding and Oneness with the Earth. Using it provides emotional and psychic protection and helps one to feel safe when dealing with intense situations and environments. It facilitates focusing on the present moment and taking care of matters at hand while helping one to slow down and appreciate the present. The essence also provides support for solitary pursuits.

Rev. Buchanan reports, "Some of the members of our group have been asked to clear out old buildings of bad stuff from the past. The shamans particularly, who are more likely to experience the vibes than the magicians, recommend Turtle to keep thoroughly grounded when in difficult energy situations. The magicians, who tend to clear things out without regard to experiencing them, also recommend Turtle before banishing rituals because there is less danger of an imbalance of energy that could drain the magician."

Finally, the editors asked me to comment on SPIDER ESSENCE, since a similar preparation--Cobweb--is featured in a separate article in this issue. As the "Weaver of the Web," Spider Essence facilitates inner connection and integration as it helps to access one's deepest inner wisdom and it nurtures a sense of Wholeness. A vehicle of interconnectedness, it supports one in tying together that which has felt separate within oneself. Spider nurtures a sense of belonging, connection, and integration at all levels of one's being. The professional readers among Rev. Buchanan's group, including those who use Runes, Tarot, Astrology charts, and the I Ching, note the amazing ability of Spider Essence to enhance the power to integrate data and to find intuitive connections among what seem to be distinct matters.

In closing, I can only echo what Rev. Buchanan says, "I hope these observations help you and your various groups to choose an essence that will help you on your path. For those who already have totems or power animals, the choice is a no-brainer. Silent Wolf will attest to that, as will some of the Bear people among our group."
